Here are some photos of non-political student graffiti, although most of it has undergone much fading. This site--College Drive--is a little out of town and located just below the university (and in close proximity--500m or so--to much student accommodation from two sides). I taught at this university for several years and some students informed me that occasionally students were known to engage in the crime of graffiti at this site, particularly as graduation approached.

During the four years I worked at this university, I was not aware of any complaints about this graffiti and it appeared to be something that university officials and municipal authorities ignored--kids will be kids... Although, then again, I did not delve into the longer history of this graffiti and it is possible there were more official complaints lodged about it in the past or even after I'd left.

There is an interesting article of this type of graffiti:

Schaefer, D. (2004). Perceptual biases, graffiti and fraternity crime: Points of deflection that distort social justice. Critical Criminology, 12(2), 179-193.

The abstract for this article is:

"Although the official, law-enforcement policy in Bloomington, Indiana, categorized graffiti as vandalism, prominently displayed graffiti produced by Indiana University's student organizations escaped criminalization. This article documents the differential, criminal justice treatment of graffiti vandalism based on the group producing it thereby reaffirming the existence of a class-based system of justice. This article also uncovers a hidden bias inherent in Chambliss' “The Saints and the Roughnecks” by arguing that university students, whose graffiti do not receive negative sanctioning, represent Saints at the college level who exhibit criminal behavior. University-level lessons about how the crimes of the privileged go unprosecuted or become transformed into civil rather than criminal events could very well pave the way for further crimes after graduation rather than the “Saintly” adulthood implied by Chambliss. More research into the alternate system of justice used with regard to university students could shed light on both the problems and possibilities encountered when implementing alternate systems of social justice."

These footpath stickers--which have a more durable permanence that one might think--likely captures the evolution of 'styles' of business graffiti. That is, these stickers are an effective way to achieve the same goal of a spray-painted stencil, but its seemingly less permanent nature and photographic acuity perhaps better ensures viewers perceive it as legal "advertising" and not as illegal "graffiti"... It is still likely to be illegal (it is unlikely the Wellington Phoenix football club sought permission of the city council to place these stickers all around the central business district), but few people are likely to perceive it to be a kind of graffiti--it is effectively both "visible", yet in terms of its legality, "invisible". That said, some city councils have complained about this type of marketing and their illegal nature. One example is the Calgary City Council, who include "stickers" in their bylaw definition of graffiti:

"Graffiti includes words, drawings, or stickers applied to public surfaces in any way. It's against our Community Standards Bylaw. Property owners must remove or cover graffiti on their premises. Fines range from $150 for not removing graffiti to $5,000 for applying it."

https://www.calgary.ca/bylaws/graffiti.html

TechCreate (an Irish digital learning and fabrication company specializing in marketing) promote a way around such complaints with the concept of "reverse graffiti", which is:

"…is a method of creating images or messages by cleaning dirt off surfaces, usually pavements or walls. Instead of adding paint or ink, you’re removing the dirt in a specific pattern — leaving behind a clean image or logo that stands out against the surrounding grime. It’s eye-catching, environmentally friendly, and — in most places — legally less problematic than traditional graffiti or posters"

https://techcreate.ie/reverse-graffiti-s...th-impact/

Another "legally less problematic" solution for marketers is using light projected images on footpaths (see this website's "Other" category--the photo from "Toronto, Canada"--for such an example).

The Wellington Phoenix photo was taken in May 2025.

I'm not sure what this photo would/should be categorized as... It is a rotating light image projection onto a high-traffic footpath in central Toronto (note the projector in the top righthand corner of the photo). It is a creative way around the potentially illegal nature of business graffiti.

It perhaps illustrates the progression of business graffiti finding creative ways to avoid potential complaints about the semi-permanent nature of spray painting stencils (much as some marketers have moved from using spray paint to less permanent chalk substances).

This photo was taken circa 2023.
